So much more than a tool, the surfboard is the philosophical icon, a sacred craft, a culturally pervasive symbol of freedom, adventure and enduring youth. This is why the surfboard builder was once the primary arbiter of surfing culture, from those early Hawaiian kahunas to the first wave of board manufactures. Surfboard builders shaped surf culture, both literally and figuratively. It was all about the ride–what you wore came second. At SSFF we want to maintain this philosophy. To put the surfboard — and the modern day kahunas who craft and design them — back at the forefront of surf culture. Today the international surfboard building community places surf culture, its influence, its importance, its responsibility, back in the hands of the artisans who shape our sacred craft – and ultimately our future. Join us as we showcase craftsman, surfboards, art, movies, music & more.
Every shaper in the contest will shape an interpretation of a Lighting Bolt mid-length, single fin, starting from the same blank in four hours. The shaping contest will take place on Saturday and Sunday in a shaping room in the courtyard.

Michele Puliti is a shaper fascinated by everything that revolves around the culture of surfing, the art of  hand-made drove him to get involved with surfing and shaping in the early 80s. Passion and creativity worked together creating a path that soon turned into his profession: he continuously researches shapes and lines of the past and of innovative and eco-friendly materials. Collaborations with shapers from other countries, experiences in the artistic field and sharing are the ingredients that represent the the attention and care for this handmade product. For Michele, being a shaper in Italy means doing a job outside the box, following a lifestyle where contact with the sea is essential, with the belief that no machine can replace what “craftsmen” can create from their hands and their mind.

MarkG is a flamboyant and legendary icon of shaping, sometimes a rough and a shy person. Over the years he has managed to make his passion a job in a geographical area almost forgotten by the god of the sea. Born and raised in the outskirts of north Ancona, Gianluca got involved in the world of boards in his youth. Inspired by the shapes of the 70’s reinterpreting to obtain new lines functional for the swells of the Adriatic sea. It didn’t take long from shaping the first models of classic longboards for personal use to the launch as a shaper in an “official” capacity (December 2013).  He has always favored quality by making few boards but that are perfectly finished for the customer, with work processes that only years of experience allow him to manage.

Marcello Zani, surfboard shaper from Cesena, dedicated the first part of his life to car racing. The life of a professional pilot allowed Marcello to develop a mentality dedicated to achieving maximum performance, research, analysis, attention to detail and great determination. As a child he was fascinated by the skate punk culture and his love for water finally led him to surfing. In 2014, he began shaping and producing surfboards under the name of Sequoia Surfboards. In just two years he gets to know and works with the most important surfboard manufacturers in Europe and America. In 2016  he begins a  collaboration with Professor Riccardo Rossi, developer of a technology dedicated to surfboards that uses computing simulation. Marcello decides to invest in this technology, and with Sequoia he becomes the first in the world to use CFD, (Computational Fluid Dynamics), in surfboard design.
